MV ORTELIUS

Originally built in 1989 as a research vessel for the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ortelius was later refurbished and converted into a passenger expedition ship. Today, she is operated by Oceanwide Expeditions and remains one of the strongest, most ice-capable ships in the polar fleet. She sleeps 108 guests maximum. 

With her ice-strengthened hull (Ice Class UL1, equivalent to 1A), Ortelius is designed to venture into areas that few other passenger ships can reach. While her onboard comforts are simple compared to newer luxury vessels, Ortelius makes up for it with maximum time in the field—more landings, more Zodiac excursions, and more opportunities to explore the Antarctic wilderness up close.
