Life On Board MS Roald Amundsen is about living the dream - a journey unlike any other—an expedition ship built for discovery, designed with sustainability, and outfitted for comfort. Launched in 2019 and operated by HX/Hurtigruten Expeditions, she’s one of the most advanced hybrid-powered vessels in polar cruising. With capacity for approx. 500-532 guests (500 in Antarctica operations) and a crew of around 98-151, the ship blends size and intimacy, giving you both comfort and access to remote wilderness. 

Design, Ambience & Public Spaces

Roald Amundsen’s interior evokes the Scandinavian spirit of hygge—natural materials, cozy touches, and warm but elegant décor. The finishes include granite and pale woods, soft wool blankets, runic-patterned carpets, and striking art collection sculptures and prints curated by the Queen Sonja Print Award.  

You’ll have numerous ways to immerse in the scenery: two-level indoor/outdoor observation decks, the Explorer Lounge with panoramic windows, outdoor gym/walking areas, and deck spaces designed for wildlife viewing in all weather.

Dining & Social Life

Meals aboard the Roald Amundsen are varied and convivial. Three dining venues:

• Aune (main restaurant) with open seating and home-style, Scandi-inspired fare

• Lindstrøm, a more upscale restaurant (suite or reservation required, sometimes for extra cost)

• Fredheim, casual international bites and relaxed dining atmosphere  

Lounges and bars offer places to gather, relax, enjoy hot drinks, or unwind with a cocktail against polar backdrops. Shared spaces are designed for both socialising and quiet reflection.  

Eco & Hybrid Power Features

MS Roald Amundsen is a hybrid-powered ship: emissions are reduced by approx. 20% through electrical propulsion when possible, plus other efficiency measures. She’s built to Polar Class PC6, enabling safe travel in ice-filled polar waters. Single-use plastics are eliminated. Sustainability is not a side note—it’s central.
