LIFE ON BOARD MV PLANCIUS

Things to do aboard the MV Plancius for its Antarctica Cruises

LIFE ON BOARD THE MV PLANCIUS

Journeying with MV Plancius means signing up for a true polar expedition: rugged yet comfortable, purposeful rather than polished. This is a ship for travellers who want to be immersed in Antarctica, not dazzled by extravagance.

Expedition Roots & Atmosphere

Originally built in 1976 as a Dutch oceanographic research vessel, MV Plancius was fully refitted in 2009 for expedition cruising under Oceanwide Expeditions. Its ice-strengthened hull (Ice Class 1D) and diesel-electric propulsion mean it handles polar waters with due safety and efficiency, while reducing noise and vibration onboard.

With a passenger capacity of around 108 guests across 50–53 cabins in six categories (twins, superiors, window & porthole cabins, and shared quadruple/quintuple options), Plancius strikes a balance — comfortable enough for quality rest, compact enough to retain flexibility and intimacy.

Shared Spaces & Daily Rhythm

There is communal life onboard. Expect warm camaraderie. The observation lounge (with panoramic views), bar, library, and lecture room are where guests gather for daily debriefs, story swapping, and evenings of learning.  Breakfasts and lunches are casual affairs (usually buffet-style), dinners are plated, multi-course, but never showy — nourishment comes first.

Between Zodiac cruises, hikes, kayaking, snowshoeing or even basecamp activities on some itineraries, there’s downtime: catching up on photos, reading, stargazing or simply breathing in the silence of the ice.

Comfort Meets Function

Cabins are private-bathroomed, modestly furnished, and designed for warmth and rest rather than luxury: lower berths in most categories, queen beds in “superior” cabins; some cabins have windows, others portholes. Common areas are cosy and functional. Decks are walk-around where possible, providing vantage points for wildlife or glacier viewing. The ship has efficient Zodiac loading bays and exterior decks built to shorten the time between ship and shore.

Things To Know

  • Dress is informal, with layers and gear for variable conditions.

  • WiFi, international guides, lectures, photography support are part of the onboard program.

  • The ship’s pace is governed by ice, weather, daylight — flexibility is part of the deal.
