Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872–1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer and one of the greatest figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Born in Borge, Norway, he originally studied medicine before turning to a life of exploration. Amundsen was known for his meticulous planning, innovative survival strategies, and determination to conquer some of the most challenging frontiers on Earth.
Achievements
First to Reach the South Pole (1911): On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and his team became the first humans to reach the South Pole, beating British explorer Robert Falcon Scott by five weeks.
Northwest Passage (1903–1906): He was the first to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage, a dangerous sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic.
First Flight Over the North Pole (1926): Amundsen, along with Umberto Nobile and Lincoln Ellsworth, flew in the airship Norge across the Arctic, considered the first verified flight over the North Pole.
Accomplishments
Perfected the use of sled dogs and Inuit survival techniques, which were crucial to his South Pole victory.
Proved that careful preparation and cultural knowledge were as important as bravery in exploration.
Led multiple successful expeditions in both the Arctic and Antarctic, making him one of the few explorers to achieve major milestones at both poles.
Important Facts
Nicknamed “The Last of the Vikings” for his adventurous spirit.
He initially planned to go to the North Pole but shifted to the South Pole after news that others had claimed the Arctic first.
Disappeared in 1928 while on a rescue mission in the Arctic, trying to save fellow explorer Umberto Nobile after a failed expedition. His body was never found.
Honoured worldwide with monuments, ships, and research stations named after him.
“Victory awaits him who has everything in order—luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck."
