Frequently Asked Questions

MV Ortelius is a former research vessel converted into a comfortable expedition ship for polar cruising. With an ice-strengthened hull (Ice Class 1A Super), it is perfectly suited for navigating the pack ice of Antarctica. The ship carries a maximum of 108 passengers, making it one of the smaller, more intimate vessels in the region.

Your voyage includes:

  • Accommodation in your chosen cabin category (all with private bathroom)

  • All meals, snacks, tea, and coffee during the voyage

  • Zodiac cruises and shore landings with the expedition team

  • Expert lectures and presentations on wildlife, geology, history, and climate

  • Loan of rubber boots for shore excursions

Flights, optional activities, and personal expenses are not included unless specified.

Depending on the itinerary and season, you may encounter:

  • Penguins – Adelie, Gentoo, Chinstrap, and King penguins (on longer voyages)

  • Whales – Humpback, Minke, Orca, and occasionally Blue whales

  • Seals – Weddell, Crabeater, Elephant, and Leopard seals

  • Birdlife – Albatrosses, Petrels, and Skuas

Daily activities focus on Zodiac cruises to glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife colonies, plus shore landings for guided hikes and exploration. Ortelius also offers optional adventure activities such as kayaking, camping on the ice, mountaineering, and snowshoeing.

Ortelius offers simple but comfortable cabins, a dining room, lecture room, and bar/lounge. The atmosphere is casual and international, with a strong emphasis on community and exploration.

  • Nov–Dec: Pristine ice landscapes, penguin courtship, nesting birds

  • Jan–Feb: Peak wildlife activity, penguin chicks, whale sightings increase

  • Feb–Mar: Excellent whale watching, dramatic light, fewer ships

Layered clothing is essential: thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and waterproof outer shells. Bring hats, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a good camera. Rubber boots are provided, and parkas are usually available to purchase.

Ortelius operates under strict IAATO environmental guidelines, ensuring minimal impact on the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. The ship emphasizes responsible wildlife viewing, waste management, and fuel efficiency.
